Competing Constants

By Doug Long

Several years ago I had the opportunity to sit in on a meeting of the upper management of a company I worked for. Change was in the air and people didn’t like it. While people were getting restless and grumbling the Vice President spoke up and said that there was one constant in life, and that was change. I thought about that for a while and had to agree that change is indeed a constant in our lives. Change can be disruptive and unsettling, and a person may wonder where they can find refuge from this constant uncertainty. The answer is another constant that doesn’t change. Here are some constants that can be found in God’s word.

The bible tells us that God is unchanging. Malachi 3:6 "For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob. And Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

The bible tells us that God loves us John 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. And Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The bible tells us that God will comfort us Isaiah 49:13 Sing, O heavens! Be joyful, O earth! And break out in singing, O mountains! For the LORD has comforted His people, And will have mercy on His afflicted. And Exodus 33:14 The LORD replied, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."

If this world of constant change is driving you nuts, I encourage you to look to another constant where you can find what you need. God loves us and he wants us to be his children. The love and comfort that you can find in a relationship with God will always be there for you, and that is a constant you can depend on.
